CyberCorps was started in February 2005 out of a partnership between Salem CyberSpace and The Family Self-Sufficiency Center (FSSC). From February through June, 30 low-income youth from Salem and Lynn were trained in the use of Macromedia Dreamweaver web design software and Adobe Photoshop image editing software. This training was funded through a CTCnet grant awarded to FSSC. FSSC provided some basic computer training and workplace training to the youth and subcontracted the Dreamweaver and Photoshop skills training to Salem CyberSpace. With a grant from the North Shore Workforce Investment Board, 20 low-income youth were hired during July and August of 2005 to complete 4 web sites for 4 community organizations.
Because of the quality of the work and the enthusiasm of the youth, Salem CyberSpace decided to transform the summer program into a teen-based business which will retain the name of CyberCorps of Salem (cybercorpsofsalem.com). Under the direction of Youth Manager Robin Frans, CyberCorps teens create professional websites and e-marketing campaigns. Each client project is approached with enthusiastic professionalism. CyberCorps team members are trained in both website design and development, as well as, search engine optimization techniques.
Salem CyberSpace (salemcyberspace.org) is a program of North Shore Community Action Programs, Inc. (northshorecap.org) with a mission to effect positive change through technology for low-income and unemployed individuals, their families and the community. Salem CyberSpace runs adult training programs, provides staff training and IT services for non-profit organizations and runs an after-school academic program for teens.
